Sanya Malhotra is one of the most talented and popular actresses of Bollywood. With her performances in her recent movies like 'Badhaai Ho', 'Photograph' and 'Pataakha', she has made a mark for herself in the industry. Just before the actress’ birthday, we got in touch with the star and spoke to her about her birthday plans, upcoming movies, her love for dance and much more.
What are your birthday plans going to be this year?
No I’m travelling and this is the first time I’m travelling and working on my birthday and I’m really excited. Because every year I pray that I hope that I’m in front of the camera, I hope I’m on some set on my birthday but for the past two-three years I have been shooting but on my birthday it used to be an off day but I am happy that I am getting a working birthday this year. I am travelling; I’ll be away from my family and going to Dubai for an event.
Do you have any special birthday ritual that you do every year or plan something?
I have not planned anything. My birthday ritual is to eat Pizza so I am definitely going to have Pizza tomorrow and apart from that I haven’t planned anything special.
What does 2020 look like for Sanya?
Exciting as of now. I am really happy, three of my films are releasing this year. I am also going to start working on a couple of other exciting projects and so ‘Ludo’ is releasing in April, in May ‘Shakuntala Devi’ is releasing and then ‘Pagglait’. These three films are really special and close to my heart and will be really looking forward to it so
achha hi lag raha hai
because
2020 ki abhi shuruat
hi hui hai aesa mujhe lag raha hai
just hoping
aesa hi chalta rahe
. (laughs)
You are working on your films back-to-back. Do you get to spend some time off with your family and friends?
You know during ‘Pataakha’ and ‘Badhaai Ho’ I did get some time off but now I don’t have.
Dukhti rag pe haath rakh dia hai
. (laughs) I am not getting time at all which is good like it’s exciting. Every day I am really looking forward to
ab kya hoga ab kya hoga ya ab kya naya opportunity hai set pe jana hai
because I love being on set so I’m not complaining. I really do crave to spend time with my family they’re in Delhi and I want to spend more time with my Mumma Pappa and my sister, so that I do miss a lot.
Since you love dancing, would you like to do a dance movie?
Yeah why not like it’s a yes in caps letters with many exclamation points. (laughs) I am honestly dying to dance in a movie and honestly I really want to do a dance film now. Dance is my passion and I really enjoy it but I did not get that opportunity to do it in front of the camera. ‘Morni banke’
me mila tha
but I can’t call it my dance wala break so I am hoping
abhi 2020 itna achha dikh raha hai toh
this year I am also hoping k like this year it’s like a goal like a resolution that I have to do a dance film.
Doing so many films which your movie character is the most special to you?
I think all of them. My most favorite would be ‘Pataakha’ because it was liberating and I never thought I would be able to do a character like that because she’s so different and she’s completely opposite, she’s so loud and also it was a great learning experience and it’s very special.
Abhi toh meri teeno filmo me main choose hi nahi kar sakti
. The films that are releasing right now it’s really hard for me to sit down and say
yeh character me yeh achha laga
.
What drives your decisions to choose such diametrically different projects?
I think it’s the content. I think we all know that in a film the content is the hero. I am glad that people are writing such amazing scripts and with such powerful female characters so I try to see a script or a story from an audience point of view and if that inspires me, touches me or connects with me as an audience then I feel it’s the script.
How has your journey been from your debut movie to till now?
I still can’t believe it. It feels like a dream and it’s really important to start with a good debut. I couldn’t have asked for anything better than ‘Dangal’ because we got to prove ourselves there in every way. The character has really changed my life, so it’s really important to start off with a really good debut. First impression is the last impression and eventually
isme opportunities milte nahi hai
for newcomers. It’s really important to prove yourself as a performer and as an actor.
Which is that one actor and director that’s the top in your bucket list?
I have a huge bucket list of actors and directors.
Abhi toh party shuru hui hai (laughs).
I want to work with Ranveer Singh, Rajkummar Rao and I want to work with Nitesh sir again and Ritesh, Anurag Kashyap, Hansal Mehta and the list goes on.
We are in awe of your look in ‘Shakuntala Devi’. How excited are you about the movie?
I am extremely excited. The look is very different and since it’s inspired from Shakuntala Devi’s daughter Anupama Banerji so we had to match her look while she was growing up. There are various stages to my look which is amazing and exciting. I can’t really talk about the character much but I’m really excited, and I have straight hair in it. I have never seen myself like that ever. I love my curly hair and I don’t like straightening done at all. I don’t like to do anything, but this was a good change and it was so important for the character. Whenever I used to get in that costume and hair and makeup I used to feel like Anu. That does the seventy percent of the actor’s job with the hair and makeup and the costume with rest you just have to build your character and memorize your lines. I am really excited and I hope people like it.
